2017 saw multi-instrumentalist & producer Pete Cunningham a.k.a. Ishmael embark on his most ambitious venture yet with the launch of the Ishmael Ensemble. Their debut EP “Songs For Knotty” took the listener on a whirlwind journey through psych-out jazz & evocative ambience that quickly caught the attention of tastemakers Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft & Dan Digs. This was followed up by a special edition version with bonus live tracks & video that saw “Songs for Knotty” end up in Xlr8r’s top releases of 2017. The project was also picked up by legendary producer & Dj Carl Craig who enlisted the group to remix his live project “The Melody” for French label InFiné Music. This will be the Ensemble’s first release of 2018, followed by a new single & video with visual artist Amie Nowlan dropping in February.
As well as their regular live shows, Ishmael Ensemble will be performing a re-work of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s “Technodelic” from May 2018 until the end of the year. Debuting at London’s Jazz Cafe on May 5th the show will feature live interpretations of the seminal album by the legendary Japanese band alongside live visuals by Amie Nowlan (Cut Film).
